The Final Destination was a landmark film for the series, marking its first foray into 3D technology. It was also the first film in the series to be shot in HD 3D. After the commercial success of Final Destination 3 , a fourth film entered development, with Eric Bress (who co-wrote Final Destination 2 ) writing the script. The script impressed producer Craig Perry and New Line Cinema enough to green-light the project. James Wong, who directed the first and third films, was initially on board to direct but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Consequently, the studio turned to David R. Ellis, who had successfully directed Final Destination 2 and was excited about the new 3D format. Filming began in March 2008 and wrapped up in late May of the same year.
