The film opens in 1738 Paris, where Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born on a putrid fish market, an unwanted infant left for dead. He survives and grows up in a brutal orphanage, where his remarkable sense of smell is first noted. Sold to a tannery as a child laborer, he remains a feral, silent outcast, until one day in Paris, he catches the scent of a young girl selling plums. He becomes intoxicated, and when he accidentally kills her, he is plunged into a desperate new obsession: how to capture and preserve a human scent.

On his journey, Grenouille isolates himself in a cave for years, and during this time, he makes a horrifying discovery: he has no smell at all. He comes to believe that this is the reason for his alienation from humanity and that by creating the ultimate perfume, he can become "human".
