Released in May 1983, Blue Thunder follows Officer Frank Murphy (Roy Scheider), a troubled Vietnam War veteran and LAPD helicopter pilot. Murphy is chosen to test a new, top-secret weaponized helicopter designed for urban surveillance and crowd control, nicknamed "Blue Thunder."
