The Brutal Brilliance of Yorgos Lanthimos’s Dogtooth (2009)

Dogtooth functions as a complex allegory that can be interpreted on multiple levels. At its core, it is an examination of extreme parental control and the willful construction of a false reality. Director Yorgos Lanthimos has stated that the film came from observing friends who had recently married and become parents. He wondered what would happen if a family became so paranoid about protecting its children that it shut out the entire world and became a totalitarian microcosm. dogtooth -2009-
