The plot unfolds in two parts. In 1958, a 15-year-old German schoolboy, Michael Berg (played by David Kross), falls ill on his way home and is helped by a 36-year-old tram conductress, Hanna Schmitz (played by Kate Winslet). This encounter leads to a passionate, clandestine affair that lasts a summer. The unique dynamic of their relationship is centered around Michael reading literary classics aloud to Hanna.
